the other gems of the Upper Tiber Valley. It is a few minutes drive

There are eight comfortable double ensuite bedrooms which are decorated and furnished in the local traditional style with hand painted wrought-iron beds. Some of the rooms have balconies and all of them are provided with a private bathroom, direct telephone, TV, radio and mini-bar. There are two bedrooms with facilities for disabled people. |
The rooms look out over the terracotta tiled roofs of the village and
surrounding countryside and have glorious views towards the hills of
Umbria and the distant Apennines.
The elegant small restaurant is personally managed by the owners and
offers gastronomic menus based on regional specialties such as truffles
and wild mushrooms. The wine cellars of the restaurant are stocked with
more than 700 labels of specially selected regional and national wines
as well as the full bodied house red. During the sultry summer months
you can dine outside on one of the many terraces that surround the hotel.

The delight of staying at Locanda del Capitano is that it is located in a village which is regarded by discerning travellers as one of the most sublime of hill top villages in the whole of Italy. Montone has pedestrian only narrow cobbled streets which are bedecked with potted geraniums.

There are stunning views of the Apennine mountains from numerous vantage points on the old town walls and the picturesque piazzas, coffee bars and restaurants and a fascinating medieval history makes it an enchanting place to experience the charms of a quintessential Italian village.

Like many villages in this part of Italy there are festivals and celebrations that take place in Montone that retain the traditions of the local community. A medieval pageant is enacted every Easter Monday with parades and tournaments being held in the streets of the village. During the last week in May there is a celebration of the master blacksmiths who come from all over Italy to ply their trade in the streets. During August, normally on the Sunday after Ascension, the whole village celebrates the occasion in 1473 when Carlo Braccio Fortebraccio presented a thorn from Christ’s crown to Montone. |

In early November there is a culinary Festival of the Woods to celebrate
the unforgettable taste of fungi, truffles and the other hidden flavours
that the local woods have to offer.
Also during the summer the recently created film festival, which has
gained a large national popularity, is held with films being shown in
and around the cloisters of the Church of San Francesco.
The village has some lovely old buildings to explore. The Church of San Francesco and neighbouring convent now houses the Museo Comunale and some lovely old frescoes and other works of art. The Collegiata di Santa Maria preserves the Sacra Spina, the thorn said to have come from Christ’s crown of thorns and this church also contains a Last Supper by the Antwerp born artist Denis Calvaert. The Rocca d’Aries is a huge restored castle that used to be Braccio Fortebraccio’s stronghold.

Giancarlo and Carmen are the charming owners of Locanda del Capitano. They totally restored the old building, where Braccio Fortebraccio the famous Condottiere once lived, in 1997 and have created not only their own home, but a romantic charming hotel with a uniquely elegant and welcoming atmosphere as well.

They celebrated their wedding here and together Giancarlo, nicknamed the Captain by the villagers, Carmen and Gian Marco (Captain Junior!), have created a very special place for you to stay in. Right from the outset they opened the door of their home to guests, welcoming them in the same style and warmth as the people of Montone had welcomed them.
They will advise on places to visit and explore and can organise special
events exclusively for you as guests at Locanda
del Capitano:
· Truffle hunting with specially trained dogs followed by a tasting
of what you find.
· Guided horse riding in the countryside surrounding Montone.
· Visits to selected potteries in Deruta.
· Wine tasting visits to the best cellars in the region.
Its location close to many of Italy’s cultural gems and in the magical Umbrian countryside with its terraces and gardens overlooking the tiled rooftops of Montone, makes Locanda del Capitano the ideal place to enjoy a memorable stay in the tranquillity of the heart of Italy.
